What’s Your Dream?

Sarah: “You know Mom, everyone has their own dream! I don’t have to be writer.”

Me: “Okay. What’s your dream?”

Sarah: “I want to be a candy shop.”

Me: “You mean a candy shop owner?”

Sarah: “Yeah. A candy shop owner.”

I don’t think I ever told my five-year old that she HAD to be a writer. I might have told her she has a fun imagination, an ingredient that makes great writers. And passion. My five-year old is all kinds of passion. Especially about candy!

On this Martin Luther King Day, you will hear his words echo through the radio, TV, internet and streets… “I have a dream… ” Because MLK Jr. was a dreamer. And all notable accomplishments and change begin with one thing: a dream! Or a vision. An idea. And that little seed of impossible thoughts becomes possible when the dream wakes up in real-time and heads leave pillows to plan. And the cost is counted. And plans lived out.

The cost of freedom has always known a price tag history never banked on. But freedom, as a grand concept, where every human being truly lives freely is what fuels the dreamer’s dream.

If you know me at all, you know one of my dreams is to write for the freedom of trafficked victims, especially little girls. I champion organizations like Nomi Network and movies like Trade of Innocents. But today, I want to talk about a different kind of freedom.

Lately, I have been contemplating what it really means to live freely. These are the words that I’ve been reading and rereading, because I wonder how free any person is if they don’t know freedom inside. In those deep places of   his or her heart and mind.

“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom.” [Galatians 5:13-15 The Message]

Dreams and freedom. Freedom and dreams. They go hand in hand. Fight for the freedom to dream, because your life depends on it. Life lived freely that is.

Happy MLK Day All. Dream big. Dream free. Then go to it… and live.

**What’s your dream? Are you free? Don’t get in the ring of life alone. Because that’s the part that makes the journey worth it. Don’t fight alone. You… don’t fight alone.

  1. Good stuff here today, Raj. I’ve always wanted to be a writer…can’t remember ever wanting differently. I’m thankful God has opened the doors to make it happen. But I love how those verses you included from Galatians remind me that my dream is bigger and better when the motivation is to serve others…we can do that through our writing…and it’s an awesome calling. But it’s so easy to slip into my dream being all about me…I don’t want to be that person…

    Awesome stuff, as always, Raj!

    • It’s fun to share the dream, Melissa! And don’t worry, the minute you get, “It’s all about me” on me, I’ll send you a secret code, cyber snap to remind you that it isn’t about any of us. How ’bout the word, “Wrong.” No one will suspect a thing! 🙂 🙂 -raj
