Married or not, if you’re an Asian living in New York, you know you have a crush on our boy Jeremy Lin. I mean come on, when’s the last time you saw the definition of arms like that on an Asian man. Every Asian guy out there is doing push-ups right now, now that they know they have competition.
Seven games ago when he began lighting up the Knicks’ courts with his spark, sizzle, and spin, the word around town was, even if it’s just a one game fluke, how fun to see one of “us” in the rare limelight of the NBA. When Kobe Bryant of the Lakers foolishly told the media he had no idea who Lin was, not even hours later, he walked off the court to eat his words in the locker room. Lin brought the Knicks to a game slamming win against the Lakers that night and the Lin-Asian explosion was just getting started. Last night, every Asian friend I know was at the game. Either in person or glued to their TV’s back home. Okay, maybe not every Asian, but the FB status quota was up there.
In fact, one friend simply wrote, “This is a status about Jeremy Lin” and the “LIKES” accumulated like flies to honey!
What I love about the Lin-tabulous baller is his story. That’s what makes the world go ’round right. A great story. Our boy, I use that term loosely, but every New Yorker is claiming him these days. Anyway, our boy Jeremy is a Harvard grad with humble beginnings who slept on his brother’s couch only a week ago. And his faith. Strong and real. And the kicker. I hear he’s single! Not that I’m looking.
I love what he said after last night’s game: Calling his story a “Modern day miracle.” His history is full of rejections. Until one person took a chance on him, saw his potential and believed in him. I’d say he has more than stepped up to the three point line (since “plate” doesn’t quite apply in this case.) When I watched him take the buzzer beater winning shot against the Raptors, he looked perfectly calm, collected and all “I got this” if you ask me.
After his Tuesday win over the Raptors, Lin finished with precious words that I think about every time I see a sunrise, hear my girls laughing or type a pivotal word that makes my novel stronger: “The fingerprints of God” are all over this.
Enuf sed. Why mess with a good Ling?
And for the record, I’m still a Bulls fan, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a little Lin-love in me!
